According to a recent survey, more and more people are ditching their strict exercise regimens in favour of relaxing with a cold one (or ten). And why not? After all, who has the time or energy to hit the gym when there are so many delicious craft beers to try?
But it’s not just about the beer – the beer-belly is also a symbol of pride. It’s a badge of honor, showing the world that you’re a true connoisseur of all things fermented and frothy. It’s a sign that you know how to kick back and enjoy life, rather than stressing about every little calorie.
Not everyone, however, is embracing beer-belly culture. The LGBTQ+ community has been vocal in opposing the trend, saying a tight set of abs are far superior to squishy belly.
“The beer-belly is just another way for straight men to cling to outdated ideas about what it means to be a ‘real man’,” says LGBTQ+ activist James Williams. “It’s about upholding toxic masculinity and excluding anyone who doesn’t fit into that narrow definition of manhood. Plus, you’re pretty much dead as a gay man without the perfect body.”
Although the beer-belly may be having a moment, it’s clear that not everyone is buying into it. As for the rest of us, feel free to let those blubbery bellies hang out. Embrace the beer-belly, because it’s the hottest trend of 2023.
